This discipline was granted the right to confer a master’s degree in first-level biology in 2011, with master’s student admissions beginning in 2012. In 2018, the biology discipline was designated as a "High-Level Featured Discipline (Category B)" in Jilin Province. The Biological Science program was recognized as a "Jilin Province Brand Program" in 2014, designated as a "High-Level Featured Program (Category A)" in 2018, and rated as a "First-Class Program in Jilin Province" in 2019.

The discipline currently holds a master’s degree authorization in first-level biology and a master’s degree authorization for Biological Science Education. The biology discipline has four research focuses: botany, zoology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and cell biology.
